Position Information
Full-time, permanent (probationary) position.
Salary Range
$3,443 - $4,100 mo. Commensurate with knowledge, skills, and experience.
Responsibilities
Provide technical/specialist support for classes in stagecraft, technical production, stage rigging, and scenery automation for the School of Theatre, Television, and Film productions, practicum classes, showcases, special events, tours, and workshops. Train and supervise graduate students, student assistants, and student crew members who work in the areas of scenery construction, stage rigging, and scenery automation for the School of Theatre, Television, and Film productions. Provide, and/or instruct students as directed by the faculty Technical Director or designee, in the fabrication, installation, and strike of all scenic elements for the School of Theatre, Television, and Film productions. Maintain inventories, and organization of scenic lab equipment, stage machinery, stage rigging equipment, scenery automation equipment and supplies in all performance, storage, work and classroom spaces.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Ability to communicate effectively within all aspects and personnel of the production process. Ability to organize work and prioritize tasks. Ability to use ingenuity to solve complex problems in scenery construction, stage rigging, and scenery automation and interface them with other technical aspects of production. Ability to work effectively with groups of varied size that will have faculty, staff or student leaders. Ability to work well with students of all skill levels and to train and supervise students and assistants of all levels of experience in the use of scenery construction, stage rigging and scenery automation equipment. Ability to work at heights. Ability to lift a minimum of 70 pounds. Ability to work calmly and efficiently with others under pressure of deadlines.
Experience and Education
At least three years of professional experience in scenery fabrication, stage rigging and scenery automation experience for live theatre, musical theatre, and/or related entertainment field. This background normally would be achieved through professional training or applicable college coursework and practical experience.
Specialized Requirements
Formal technical training, course work, or college degree required. Special skills needed in the areas of advanced scenic carpentry, metal scenery fabrication, stage rigging and scenery automation. California driver's license and basic first aid & CPR certification required.
Specialized Skills
Four to five years of practical theatre scenery construction, stage rigging, and scenery automation experience which may include a bachelor's in arts or a bachelor's in fine arts in Theatre (preferably with technical production/scenic design emphasis). Ability to read and follow theatre design and construction drawings preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of computer assisted design/drafting, (AutoCad preferred). Knowledge of, and experience in all aspects of scenery construction preferred. Experience in metal fabrication including welding (gas, MIG, TIG), mill work and metal lathe preferred. Participation and/or membership in relevant professional organizations and activities preferred.
