Jack Ofield is Head of Television and Film, Filmmaker in Residence and Prof. of Film at San Diego State University. He is the founding director of The Production Center for Documentary and Drama, the professional film and television production arm of the University and the home of the graduate documentary production program.

Ofield is the executive producer of The Short List, the long-running, Emmy Award-winning showcase for international short film on PBS and cable. He produces an ongoing documentary series for public and cable TV on a range of social and cultural issues in American life, such as the recent Emmy recipients Tolerance on Trial (the Boy Scouts and gay rights), Sunshine and Shadow (mentally ill artists), A Safe Place and Shadow Children (abused and homeless youth), Dancers (life in a modern dance troupe, and the Balboa Park Trilogy, a three-part history.

He was a writer-director for the National Film Board of Canada and has produced many programs and series for PBS, ABC, CBS, CBC, Eurovision, as well as for government, educational, and cultural organizations. He was a resident director at ABC and at WNET/New York. He produced a series of short films for the UN and Japan House on artisans of the world and environmental protection documentaries for the Union of Concerned Scientists, League of Women Voters, Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union, and the California Air Resources Board.

His films have received national, New York and Southwest Emmys, American Film Festival Blue Ribbons, Motion Picture Daily Award, Gabriel Award, honors from the National Conference of Christians and Jews, Finlandia Arts and Letters Award, and others. His work is represented in collections of the Smithsonian Institution, MoMa New York, Museum of International Folk Art/Santa Fe, Philadelphia Museum, New York State Museum and others institutions. He has directed theater productions, ranging from Shakespeare to musical theater, in the U.S., England, and Canada.

He is a member of the Directors Guild of America and a Directing Fellow of the American Film Institute. He serves on a variety of arts boards and film festival juries and panels.
