Originally from Rochester, NY, Kathie worked at an arts and entertainment magazine where she wrote a local music column and music reviews. Her love of music and promoting the local music scene helped her gain experience in band management and publicity. Moving to San Diego in 1995, she began taking drum set lessons as well as attending community college. Voted Outstanding Graduating Senior in Music, Kathie graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in music (and a minor in Anthropology) in 2003. Her numerous awards include membership in Phi Beta Kappa, Golden Key International Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi, and Pi Kappa Lambda. Her other awards include: Music Scholarship from the School of Music and Dance, Travel Scholarship from the World Music Program, Phi Beta Delta Honors Society Scholarship, Ford Motor Company Scholarship and a Coca-Cola International Scholarship.

Kathie’s concentration in world music (with an emphasis in music and dance of Ghana, West Africa), led her to Ghana five times with her most recent trip in 2005. While in Ghana, she studies traditional music and dance with indigenous artists as well as travels to various regions of Ghana (and to Togo) to witness performances and partake in unique cultural experiences. Her teachers include noted African scholars J. H. Kwabena Nketia from the University of Ghana, Legon, and Dr. Komla Amoaku from the National Theatre of Ghana. In 2003, Kathie traveled to Ghana as part of a documentary crew for the nine-day funeral of the paramount chief of Ho. This resulted in her photographs being published in a calendar sponsored by the traditional council of Ho. In San Diego, she works with Kwame Degbor from the Centre for National Culture, Ghana, and Kobla Ladzekpo and Dzizorgbe Lawluvi, directors of Zadonu African Music and Dance Company.

Currently, she is a drummer and dancer in the San Diego-based group, Ho-Asogli. She serves as their booking agent, web master, and publicist. She is also working on a book regarding funerals in Ghana with Kwame Degbor and John Flood, director of Ho-Asogli. Her “loves” include photography, Macs, drumming, Flickr, chelonians, Sunday comics, Myth Busters, travel, kitties, Vegetarian Times, and thrift stores.
