STUDENT CLUBS & ORGANIZATIONS

AFRICAN STUDENT DRAMA ASSOCIATION

SKULL AND DAGGER

TEATRO ALTO

Very soon after coming in to the Department you will probably hear or see things having to do with the several student-run theatre clubs and organizations:

Skull & Dagger is the oldest student club on campus, dating back to the 1920's. Its purpose is to provide the students in the Department with further opportunities to participate in theatre projects. You don't have to be a Theatre major. All you have to do is love the Theatre and want to be involved, and join our organization. Skull & Dagger is run by your fellow students, and we elect new officers every year. Our main projects include an evening of one-act plays, a full-length play either in the spring or in the fall, various street theatre productions, and sponsorship of student productions on and off campus. We also offer a scholarship at the end of every year. There are parties and picnics as well as charity fundraisers. For more info, call Jay Sheehan at (619) 594 4990.

Teatro ALTO is a non-profit organization that originated in the 1980s at SDSU. Literally Teatro ALTO means "heightened theatre," and as our acronym ALTO explains we are A Liberated Theatre Organization -- free of labels, free to create art and provide a voice to the burning flame within the heart of the artist. We strive to bring unique theatre to the stage, and embrace cultural diversity. We encourage our members to explore and provide input in the discipline of theatre they most desire.

The Teatro ALTO scholarship provides financial resources to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled full-time in a creative arts related field --media, film, performing arts, communications, writing, and others--to assist them in beginning and completing an art project, or aiding in art-related trip expenses.

We always welcome anyone interested with open arms, so don't be afraid to voice your creativity!

African Student Drama Association (ASDA) is a new non-profit drama organization founded in the year 2004 on the campus of San Diego State University. Our Mission Statement is to:

  • Promote African culture on the San Diego State campus and surrounding community through the many forms of art;
  • Advocate unity of various African cultures as well as create awareness about Africa and its issues through the many forms of art;
  • Serve as a surrogate home away from home and network for all African students to interact;
  • Uphold the importance of scholarship and service and encourage leadership and responsibility;
  • Foster interactions with multi-ethnic peoples and other organizations.

Our performance goals are to create exciting and education programs each year that can reach, teach, and inspire others. Each year our production of The Colored Section goes to new heights as we display up and new coming talent on campus. If you would like more information about the organization, to join, or to volunteer for productions please email asda_sdsu@yahoo.com or call 619-255-1561.

SO . . . If you plan to be an active member of the Theatre Department, you will most certainly want to be a member of one of these organizations. Whether you are interested in theatre management, publicity, design, directing, or acting, there is a place for you, as each one of their productions is produced solely by the students. It is an exciting way to get involved with the department, and an excellent way to make new friends.

Check the outside call board, the one halfway up the stairs on the way to the Main Theatre Office, for notices of meetings or activities -- or leave a note in the mailboxes which are located just to the right of the Theatre Office window. Join them in their next project, or run for an office at the next election. The opportunities are as limitless as your own imagination.

They look forward to seeing you!
