Set in 1930’s rural Americana Desire Under the Elms delves into the eternal struggle of man versus himself. Ephraim Cabot has three sons, two from his first marriage (Simeon and Peter) and one from his second marriage (Eben). All three live on the family farm, toil on the family farm and desire to own the family farm. The commonality between Simeon, Peter and Eben is their resentment for their father. This dislike of their father bubbles to the surface when Ephraim returns from a long absence from the farm with a new much younger wife, Abbie. When Simeon and Peter leave the farm to pursue other interests Abbie and Eben become competitors for the inevitable, yet still unattainable, inheritance of the family farm. Matters become complicated when Eben and Abbie discover their unbridled passion for each other. In Desire Under the Elms O’Neill tackles psychological twists and turns of revenge, lust, love, hate, greed, trust and the tragic consequences that ensue.
